WILD BILL HICKOK 1837-1876 Once killed a grizzly in hand-to-hand com- bat armed with only a hunting knife, although he nearly died and almost lost an arm. Shot in the back and killed by Jack McCall while playing poker. At the time he was holding Ace's and eights which has come to be known as "The dead man's hand."
