Tayback starred as greasy spoon owner Mel on the television series Alice from 1976 to 1985.  Tayback also had extensive cameo appearances on a number of other television shows including Hawaii Five-O and  Gunsmoke.  Also appeared in the films Bullitt and Papillion, both of which starred Steve McQueen.
