The Three Stooges are without a doubt some of the most unique and underrated comedians of all time.  They are known, mostly, for their broad, surrealistic use of slapstick.   What makes the slapstick work like no other is that it is way over the top and combines with it some of the best sound effects in the history of comedy.   But what in the end really elevates it (yes, the word "elevate" may apply to the Three Stooges) are the reactions of the Stooges themselves.  The Stooges have never been accused of great nuance, but it is just that that lends itself to the great humor of the slapstick moment.  It's not the mere action of Moe gouging Curly's eyes, it's Curly's facial reactions and physical genius.  The clip below is a perfect example of Three Stooges' nuance.  They all had comedic skill, but Curly Howard's talents were unparalleled.  Watch all of the tics and movements and vocalizations that he implements.  A recent film on the Three Stooges had Michael Chiklis playing Curly.  He did a great job of mimicking Curly's mannerisms, but the difference is that Curly is mining his from a true vein of comic genius that you either have, or you don't.  Next time you're watching the Three Stooges, even if you don't happen to be a rabid fan, enjoy the hammer swings and slaps and punches, but watch for those little moments that are so underappreciated.
