ROBERT SHAW (1927 - 1978) |

On August 28th, 1978, during a break in filming of "The Avalanche Express" in Ireland, Robert Shaw went on a family golf excursion with his wife Virginia and their son Thomas. During the return drive Shaw felt chest pains and decided to pull over and walk them off. After only taking a few steps he collapsed and was pronounced dead when paramedics arrived. Robert Shaw was a classically trained Shakespearean actor and award-winning playwright, but he will without doubt be forever remembered as Captain Quint in JAWS. Shaw created a character that seemed simple on the surface, but whose depth became apparent as the film wore on. Quint was at times funny, melancholy, and even frightening. The story he tells in the hold of The Orca about delivering "the bomb" is one of the most spellbinding moments in all of film. For a small scene in one of the most thrilling films ever made, that is quite an achievement considering it was done with only dialogue. |
