THE GREAT NORTHFIELD ASS KICKIN' On September 7th, 1876 at 2:00 PM in Northfield, Minnesota, an event transpired that lives in the annals of history as one of the great escapades of the old west's most famous outlaw. We prefer to call this event THE GREAT NORTHFIELD ASS KICKIN,' for it was on the streets of Northfield that the James/Younger gang were taken to task by your average citizens. The James/Younger gang would be no more after their fateful visit to Minnesota. They targeted First National Bank because its president was a former Union Officer. At approximately 2:07 PM it was over. Two members of the gang lay dead in the street and one Minnesotan had been killed - bank employee Joseph Lee Heywood, while another was mortally wounded - Swedish immigrant Nicolaus Gustafson, both unarmed innocent civilians.

Nicolaus Gustafson was a Swedish Immigrant who just happened upon the events in history on Sept 7th, 1876. He did not speak English and did not understand the instructions that the James gang yelled at him. He was shot. |
Joseph Lee Heywood was the bank employee who told the members of the James gang that the safe was on a timer lock and that he couldn't open it. When in actuality the inside door of the safe was completely unlocked. Jesse James shot Heywood in the head. |
