MAYBELLE CARTER

May 10th, 1909 to October 23rd, 1978

Original member of The Carter Family (far left in picture.)  In Rolling Stone's list of the top l00 Country Music artists of all time, The Carter Family was ranked number two right behind Hank Williams.  Along with Jimmy Rodgers, The Carter Family was one of the very first Country Music artists to be recorded and introduced to the general public.

Perhaps the most remarkable of Maybelle's many talents was her skill as a guitarist. She revolutionized the instrument's role by developing a style in which she played melody lines on the bass strings with her thumb while rhythmically strumming with her fingers. Her innovative technique, to this day known as the Carter Scratch, influenced the guitar's shift from rhythm to lead instrument.
