JOHN KENNEDY TOOLE (1937 - 1969) Author of A CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES. Toole committed suicide by carbon monoxide asphyxiation before his manuscript was published. Toole's mother Thelma, having never lost confidence in her son, took the script to anyone that she could, eventually getting it into the hands of novelist Walker Percy who saw that the book was published. In 1981 John Kennedy Toole was posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. A Confederacy of Dunces has sold over 1.5 million copies in 18 languages. John and his mother Thelma are both buried in Greenwood Cemetery in New Orleans, Louisiana. |
