JOE MAPHIS

"KING OF THE STRINGS"

May 12, 1921 - June 27, 1986

Joe Maphis was known as the "King of the Strings" because of his absolute brilliance at playing any instrument with strings.  He is most recognizable, though, with his double-neck, custom-made Mosrite guitar.  His influence has no bounds as he clearly had an impact on other guitar giants such as Merle Travis and Chet Atkins.  Johnny Cash was so enamored with Maphis' playing that the "King of Strings" is buried not more than twenty feet from "The Man in Black."
