HATTIE MCDANIEL

JUNE 10, 1895 TO OCTOBER 26, 1952

COD:  BREAST CANCER

BURIAL:  HOLLYWOOD FOREVER CEMETERY, HOLLYWOOD, CA

First African-American to win an Academy Award.  McDaniel won for her role as Mammy in the film "Gone With the Wind."  Although the role and McDaniel have received some criticism for perpetuating black stereotypes, she definitely gave the character a depth and a self pride that made Mammy much more than two dimensional.  It was Hattie McDaniel's wish that when she died she be buried  in Hollywood Forever Cemetery.  However, at the time, blacks were not allowed to be interred in the cemetery.  She was instead buried in Angelus Rosedale in Los Angeles, California.  Hollywood Forever eventually offered McDaniel's family the option to bury Hattie in their cemetery, but the family did not want her remains disturbed after so much time had passed.  In 1999 this Cenotaph was erected in her honor, trying to atone in some way for the wrong done her.
