"The Armless, Legless Wonder" came as a result of her mother having botched, pre-natal appendix surgery.  Pushnik exploited her deformity by performing with Ripley's Believe it or Not and Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus.  Frieda never dwelled on her misfortune, rather became rather self-sufficient.   She was able to dress herself, learned to sew, and even won a penmanship contest in school.
