ELVIRA MADIGAN

Hedvig Antoinette Isabella Eleonore Jensen

December 4, 1867 – July 20, 1889

The quintessential tragic love story.  Elvira Madigan was a Danish circus performer who fell in love with Swedish Lieutenant Count Bengt Edvard Sixten Sparre.  Since the Count was already married and the father of two children there seemed little hope for the duo.  Eventually the two ran away together and in a final act of desperate they went to the island of Tasinge in Denmark where Sparre first shot Madigan and then himself.  Their graves remain in the cemetery of Landet on Tasinge to this day and are an attraction for lovers and tourists from around the world.
