Charles Starkweather and Caril Fugate went on a killing rampage through Nebraska and Wyoming in late 1957 and early 1958 leaving eleven people dead. Starkweather was strapped into the electric chair in 1959.  Fugate, fourteen at the time of the killings, was sent to prison and paroled in 1976.

As local authorities caught up with Starkweather and Fugate and engaged them in a high-speed chase, Starkwether was cut from some flying glass.  Sheriff Earl Heflin was quoted later as saying "He thought he was bleeding to death.  That's why he stopped.  That's the kind of yellow son-of-a-bitch he is."
