The bomb referred to on Archie's tombstone was that of the Pinkerton Detective Agency. They were attempting to flush out the James brothers whom they believed to be hiding in the house. Archie was killed and Zerelda, his and Jesse's mother, lost her right arm. This incident fueled a great backlash of sympathy for the James family and helped them to be seen as more heroic than perhaps they deserved. |
