ANDREW JOHNSON

1808 - 1875

SEVENTEENTH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

BURIAL:  ANDREW JOHNSON NATIONAL CEMETERY, GREENEVILLE, TENNESSEE

(GRAVESITE PHOTOS COURTESY OF JAY DUNBAR, AUSTIN, TEXAS)

Andrew Johnson acceded to the presidency of The United States of America upon the assassination of sitting president Abraham Lincoln.  Johnson had strong loyalties to the white South and abused his power to the advantage of certain Confederate alliances. Johnson was the only U.S. president to ever be impeached and is widely regarded by experts as one of the worst presidents in United States history.  One of Andrew Johnson's final acts as president was to grant unconditional amnesty to all Confederates.
