EDWARD JAMES HERRGOTT  FIRST MINNESOTA SOLDIER KILLED IN THE IRAQ WAR

 

Edward James Herrgott  was guarding  the Baghdad  National  Museum when he was struck and killed by a sniper's bullet.

LEVI TUDDY ANGELL

Levi was killed when a rocket-propelled grenade struck his Humvee.  He was the third soldier in a two-month period to die from Carlton County in Minnesota.  Levi had expressed concerns to his father, Gordon, over the lack of bulletproof vests, protective armor, and other supplies crucial to the military.

MICHAEL HERMANSON

 

Michael was a member of the North Dakota National Guard.  He was killed when a rocket-propelled grenade struck is military vehicle.

"Michael was one of those young men who had a big smile on his face all the time, and he would just light up the room when he walked in. He was a very polite, hard-working young man. He had a lot of friends in school, teachers loved him, just a great young man." - Teacher from Michael's high school.

Patrick was on a rescue mission when his helicopter crashed into the Tigris river. 

Four days later his body was found.

 

 


 

 

JAMIE MARIE MICHALSKY

 

 

Jamie had been working as a translator in Uzbekistan, but was in Kabul, Afghanistan to have a doctor look at her hand injury.  She had served a tour of duty in Afghanistan and was familiar with it, but knew of its dangers.  She was in a market place known for tourists when a Taliban suicide bomber detonated grenades he had strapped to his body. Jamie was killed along with an Afghan girl.

   TODD OLSON AND JOSHUA SCHMITZ        TWO SOLDIERS FROM LOYAL, WISCONSIN

Todd was killed by a roadside bomb while on patrol in Samarra, Iraq.  He was on the point, even though he was in command.  At Todd's funeral his teenage son said that he would be satisfied just being half the man his father was.

 

Joshua Schmitz was killed by a suicide bomber two years to the day after Todd Olson was killed.  During his funeral, his flag-draped casket rested in the same gymnasium where he had received his high school diploma.

JAMES WOSICKA

James' was killed when an IED exploded near his unit while they were on patrol in Fallujah.  We visited James' grave on what would have been his 26th Birthday.

Conor spoke Spanish and planned on pursuing a medical career upon returning to Minnesota.  He was killed when an IED exploded near his vehicle

 

 

Robert was just three months into his tour in Iraq when he was killed by an IED as he was the gunner on his Humvee.  Robert had just been married eighteen months earlier.

 

 

 

Jason was on his second tour of duty in Iraq when an IED exploded near his vehicle, killing him.  He had won numerous military honors and medals.

 

 

 

 


 

 

JACOB VANDERBOSCH

Jacob Vanderbosch was killed when an Improvised Explosive Device detonated near his jeep.  Jake was posthumously awarded the bronze star and the purple heart.

Adam was killed by a roadside bomb.  It was his lifelong dream to be a marine.

TROY LINDEN

 

Troy linden was a young man who wasn't sure of what to do with his life.  After 9/11 he decided he wanted to help his country by joining the military.  Troy was killed when a roadside bomb exploded near the Humvee that he was driving.

GREGORY L. WINCKLER

 

Gregory Winckler's Minnesota National Guard Unit served the longest stint of any Minnesota unit since World War II.  However, Gregory returned to Minnesota before the tour was over when he was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer.  Gregory hung on until every member of his unit returned to Minnesota, keeping a promise he had made to them.  Gregory Winckler leaves behind a wife and five children.

DANIEL ROBERT OLSEN

Although Daniel was wearing armor while on patrol in Fallujah, he was shot in the back and killed by small-arms fire.  He had enlisted in the Marines on his eighteenth birthday continuing a long family tradition of military service.

JOHNATHAN LEE BENSON

 

 

 

On June 17th, 2006 a bomb exploded underneath Johnathan Lee Benson's vehicle while he was in Habbaniyah.  Johnathan lost his left leg, part of his left arm,  and was paralyzed from the waist down.  If it were possible, he said, he would like to go back to Iraq.  Johnathan died on September 6th, 2006 from his injuries.
